Picture
_Ingredients:
2 cups of all purpose flour
1/2 cup of margarine
1 Tsbp of yeast
1 cup of sugar
2 eggs
1 dulce de panela (this is hardened natural, unprocessed cane-sugar candy
a pinch of salt and about 1/2 cup of water

Instructions:

  • On a clean kitchen wooden board place the flour and make a hole in the center, and add here the margarine, yeast, 1/2 of the sugar, eggs, salt and a some water
  • Mix the ingredients with your hands and knead the dough well, hitting it against the board a couple of times
  • When the dough is shiny and does not stick to your hands and becomes easy to work with, place it a warm place and cover it
  • Let it sit for about 2 hours to rise
  • In the mean time, you can grease the baking sheet and pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees for about 15 minutes before baking
  • After a couple of hours, divide the dough in 2 and roll out with a rolling pin enough to place on the baking sheet
  • Cut up in small pieces the dulce de panela and scatter over the baking sheet(this will be the filling)
  • Roll out the other 1/2 of the dough and cover up the filling
  • With the left overs from the dough, roll out long, thin strings and place over top in a criss-cross shape and sprinkle with a little bit of sugar to finish it off
  • Bake for about 30 to 40 minutes or until golden brown
This is a delicious pastry served with coffee all over El Salvador.
